To facilitate more rapid development and support we are moving towards using a PWA (Progressive Web App) for our point of care application.  The "original" app will will continue to be available from the App store and Play store - and will be continue to be supported - until we are happy with the PWA.  The PWA can be accessed at https://www.plaitpoc.org with a preview release at https://next.plaitpoc.org.

Here are some of the things that we have discovered can cause difficulties and - where available - fixes or workarounds. How you deal with some of these issues can depend on your browser or phone and we will add to these instructions as we come across new cases.

Table of contents:

  1. Problems logging in with username and password
  2. Recommended browsers
  3. Trying to use the wrong system (Service users and their contacts only)
  4. Adding Plait Point of Care to the home page
  5. You must grant...  (Permissions issues for care workers only)
  6. Carers being shown Unauthenticated Login dialog
  7. Reset app

1. Problems logging in with username and password

Care workers will almost always use a QR Code to log in, but family members will log in with username and password.  If there is a chance the user has forgotten their password they can reset it by visiting www.plaitapp.org/password-reset

Plait and Plait Point of Care treat user name as case sensitive, which is unusual and has been known to cause problems.  If the user isn't sure about the capitalisation of their username they can see it (or change it) by going through the password reset process.

2. Recommended browsers

Plait Point of Care is a Progressive Web App, which means it uses modern web technologies.  Some browsers do not yet support all these technologies, so we recommend using Chrome on Android (or desktop) or Safari (from version 11.1) on iOS.

3. Trying to use the wrong system (Service users and their contacts only)

We very often find that service users and their relatives initially try and log into the plait back office system (www.plaitapp.org) rather than the Point of Care system (www.plaitpoc.org) - presumably because the former is used to handle account / password set up.  The correct URL is https://www.plaitpoc.org

4. Adding Plait Point of Care to the home page

Chrome on Android:

With  Chrome on Android this is very straightforward, as you are prompted to do this the first time you visit the website.  If you miss the prompt, however, just click on the 3 dots in the top right hand corner and then from the options below click on Install app.

Safari on iOS:

(Scroll up)

5. You must grant...  (Permissions issues for Care Workers only)

You will see this message where you have denied the device a required permission (to the camera or geolocation).

Safari on iOS

Camera: Log out (if you are logged in) and navigate back to the site.  Safari "forgets" that you denied permissions, and so prompts you for permissions when they are required. Simply grant the permission when requested.

Location: works the same as camera provided that you have granted permissions to Safari Websites in Settings:

(Scroll up)

Additionally you can override any denied permissions by:

Chrome on Android:

Log out (if you are logged in).   If you have added the app to your home page then setting permissions is very straightforward.  Just long click on the icon to get the first screenshot, then click on Site settings to get to the second.

If you haven't added the app to your home page then you need to reset the browser permissions for this site, which is slightly convoluted.

6. Carers being shown Unauthenticated Login dialog

Sometimes we hear of carers who log in by scanning their QR Code and they are shown a dialog like this:

Known reasons for this are:

  1. The care worker is scanning a client QR code without having first logged into PlaitPOC using their own care worker QR code.
  2. The care worker is suspended.  If this is an error then go to the care worker record and replace the /careworker/ in the address bar with /user/ then open the Security tab and uncheck the Suspended checkbox.
  3. The care worker is attempting to use a login method that is no longer supported by the organisation.

7. Reset

Occasionally it may be necessary to reset the app on your phone, whilst removing and reinstalling is an option the following can also be done.

Chrome on Android:

Log out (if you are logged in).

If you have added the app to your home page long click on the icon to get the first screenshot, then click on Site settings to get to the second. Next to the usage information use the bin icon to remove the stored data.  Restart the app.

If you use the app in your browser, go to the login page then from the 3 dots menu and select Clear browsing data.
